Chief executive officer of Hewlett Packard said that the company’s plan is to be able to install its webOS operating system that the company got with the acquisition of Palm onto all HP-branded personal computers next year.

Speaking at a press conference in India, Leo Apotheker, the head of HP, said that Starting next year, every one of the PCs shipped by HP will include the ability to run WebOS in addition to Microsoft Corp.’s Windows, reports Bloomberg Businessweek. The company believes that webOS will provide better user experience in many cases than the industry-standard Windows. However, in order to achieve that the firm needs more developers to design a wide range of software applications for webOS.

At present webOS lags behind Apple iOS and Google Android. There are 350 thousand apps for the iOS and 250 thousand apps for Android. Meanwhile, there are only 6 thousand for webOS at present.

"Their Achilles’ heel is software," said Brian Marshall, an analyst at Gleacher & Co. Hewlett-Packard gets 70% of sales from computers, storage, networking and printers, 27% from providing information-technology services, and 2.2% from software.

The success or failure of HP’s webOS will show whether a hardware company can create a successful operating system that will be able to compete against Google Android or Microsoft Windows. The outcome will also show whether end-users truly need a proprietary operating system on a large amount of devices from HP.

Google on Wednesday took to the stage at Verizon's Consumer Electronics Show keynote to show off its updated Android Honeycomb mobile OS.

The company also posted a YouTube video demo of the OS (below).

Google's Mike Cleron demonstrated Honeycomb on an unnamed tablet. With Honeycomb, Google spent over a year thinking about how to rebuild Android from the ground-up, he said. Google "focused on taking all the things people already love about Android and making them richer."

Google worked to make its widgets more powerful and focused a lot of effort on making customization and multi-tasking more seamless. Indeed, multi-tasking worked quite well during the demo – a line of previously used apps were on the left-hand side of the screen, and Cleron picked up where he left off in a game of Dungeon Defenders just by tapping the preview pane.

Cleron also showed off Gmail, which has been redesigned for tablets, and his demo of a Google Maps that tilts, zooms, and rotates got a few oohs and aahs from the crowd. Notifications, meanwhile, now carry more information, like a person's photo.

Earlier today, Google's Android Open Source lead Dan Morrill tweeted that there is no "hard minimum processor requirement" to run Android Honeycomb, the new tablet-centric Google OS.

The US Department of Defence has unveiled its fastest interactive computer - made out of 1,760 Playstation 3 consoles.

Dubbed the Condor Cluster, the new system is capable of performing 500 trillion floating point operations per second.

It will be used for quickly processing high-res satellite imagery, radar enhancement, and even research into artificial intelligence.

The consoles were used as they provide maximum computing power at a budget price.

When the project began four years ago PS3s cost around £250 each, while the equivalent technology would have been about £6,500 per unit.

Officials also say the Condor will also consume less than one-tenth the power of comparable supercomputers making it a "green" supercomputer.

Mark Barnell, director of US Air Force Research Laboratory High Power Computing, said: "Such capability exceeds any other interactive supercomputer currently used by the Department of Defense."

Based at the Air Force Research Laboratory in New York, the array also uses 168 GPUs and 84 servers to direct system traffic.

The older 'fatter' Playsation 3 consoles were used as they allow installation of the Linux operating system.

Together they produce 1.5 megawatts of power. The entrance doors are 40 cm thick. The place is surrounded with the granite and it just mesmerizes with its beauty.

The FaceMash.com Web address that landed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in trouble as a Harvard University student has sold at auction for slightly more than 30,000 dollars.

FaceMash.com drew 10 bids, with the top contender offering 30,201 dollars, according to a posting online Thursday at domain name auction service Flippa.

Zuckerberg was a Harvard student in 2003 when he made a FaceMash.com website at which people could compare pictures of coeds at the college and rate which was "hotter."

The website was an instant sensation but was quickly shut down by Harvard administrators unhappy with the stunt. Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard and started Facebook in 2004.

FaceMash has been cited as an inspiration for Facebook, which has attracted more than 500 million members and made Zuckerberg a celebrity billionaire.

The FaceMash legend has been memorialized in "The Social Network" film about the birth of Facebook.

The buyer of Web address remained secret on Thursday, but Flippa went on record saying that it wasn't anyone from Facebook or Sony Pictures, which made "The Social Network" film.

This futuristic transparent cell phone is called Second Life. This cool cell phone is fully transparent. It "incorporates a double display.: when in active use the AMOLED screen powers up in all glory and in standby mode the E-ink display gets active."

This essentially means that the E-ink uses very little energy and the degree of transparency of the display shows how much battery is remaining. The more transparent the display, the less battery remaining.
